Community Courtesy Starts With Your Pets on a Leash!

As the weather warms up and more time is spent outdoors, the Village wants to remind residents to keep their dogs on a secure leash at all times. We are strengthening enforcement of our “Loose Dogs and Cats” ordinance in response to an increase in loose animal incidents.

Loose dogs and cats are more than a nuisance. They pose real public safety risks, including traffic hazards and potential injuries to both people and pets. The current minimum fine, which has remained unchanged for many years, is no longer an effective deterrent.

To better align with surrounding communities and promote responsible pet ownership, the minimum fine has been increased from $25 to $150. The existing maximum fine of $750 remains unchanged. This adjustment is not intended to generate revenue, but to encourage compliance, reduce repeat incidents, and limit the need for police and animal control response.

If you encounter a loose dog or cat, please remember:
  • Keep a safe distance. Even friendly animals may be scared or unpredictable when loose. Avoid sudden movements and do not chase the animal.
  • Check for identification. If the animal appears calm, look for a collar or tag that may help reunite it with its owner.
  • Contact local authorities. Call the non-emergency police line at (708) 206-3420 so trained officers can respond safely.
  • Help contain the animal if you can do so safely. Using a leash, fenced yard, or guiding the animal into a contained space can help prevent it from entering traffic.
The Village remains committed to providing a safe environment for all residents and their pets.

Please remember to leash your pet whenever you are outside.
