Garbage and Recycling
The Village does not perform waste collection. Garbage and yard waste are collected on a weekly basis. Recyclable waste is collected every two weeks. All garbage must be at the curb by 6:30 a.m. Two-wheeled garbage toters are available from waste disposal companies. Residents may also choose to dispose of garbage in their own 35-gallon garbage cans. Up to three cans will be collected per week.
Once a week the waste hauler will collect one large item placed at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on regularly scheduled pick up days. Additional collections are available for an extra cost.
Should your collection day fall on or after the following holidays, your collection will be delayed one day during that week: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Residents can call their waste disposal company at the number below for more information on their services.
Village ordinance requires that homeowners place their garbage, yard waste or recyclables at the curb no more than 24 hours prior to the scheduled collection day and that empty trash cans be removed from the curb after the garbage is picked up.
Recyclables are collected every two weeks on regularly scheduled pick up days. Recyclables should be placed at the curb by 6:30 a.m. for pick up in the two-wheel plastic cart provided to each resident. Contact your waste disposal company or Earth911 for more information on recycling service.
Yard Waste Disposal
Yard waste must be disposed of in biodegradable brown paper bags specifically designed for yard waste or in the plastic yard waste carts provided by your waste disposal company. Yard waste is picked up at the curb on the same day that garbage is picked up from April 1 through December 1 of each year. All yard waste must be at the curb by 6:30 a.m.
Yard waste disposed of in paper yard waste bags must have a yard waste sticker affixed to each bag in order to be picked up. Yard waste stickers can be purchased in town. For a current list of vendors please call Homewood Disposal at 708-798-1004.
Free Leaf Pick Up Program
The Village offers free leaf collection during a three week period in the fall of each year.
Annual free leaf pick up dates will be posted once available.
Leaves must be disposed of in yard waste bags or in the plastic yard waste carts. It is not necessary to affix yard waste stickers to bags during this period. Only leaves will be picked up under this program. The leaves will be disposed of at an IEPA-approved composting facility. Consequently, it is important that residents use only the biodegradable paper bags or the yard waste carts to dispose of their leaves. Yard waste other than leaves such as grass clippings, branches, etc., will not be collected unless the necessary yard waste stickers are affixed to the bags. Leaves in bags or carts should be placed at the curb for pickup on the same day as the regular garbage pickup.
Once annually, residents can bring in their tree branches to Public Works where they will be chipped, for no charge. Only tree limbs are accepted, no bushes or evergreen debris.
Branch chipping is always held the first Saturday of October from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Homewood Public Works is located at 17755 Ashland Avenue.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
Improper disposal of used motor oil and antifreeze is a serious source of water and land pollution. Dangerous pollutants must be disposed of properly. The following businesses collect these liquids at no charge:
- Pep Boys (oil only) - 18024 Halsted Street
- Year-Round Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Facilities for Illinois Residents
Used motor oil or antifreeze should be poured into a clean plastic milk jug or other sealed container. Please do not drop off these liquids at the Homewood Municipal Service Center for collection. The Village of Homewood is not equipped to provide this service.
All garbage and recycling questions should be directed to Homewood Disposal at 708-798-1004.
